Ned Stark kept Jon Snow's origin a secret to protect him from those who might seek to harm him. Jon's true parentage, as the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, would have made him a target for those who opposed the Targaryen dynasty. Additionally, Ned made a promise to his sister Lyanna to protect Jon, and keeping his true identity hidden was a way to fulfill that promise and ensure Jon's safety. Lastly, revealing Jon's true parentage could have caused tension within Ned's own family and potentially put Jon in a dangerous position. **

People call Eddard Stark "Ned Stark" instead of "Ed" because "Ned" is a common nickname for "Eddard" in the fictional world of Westeros in the "Game of Thrones" series. The use of "Ned" as a nickname for "Eddard" is a cultural and linguistic convention within the story's setting, and it has become the widely accepted and familiar way to refer to the character. Additionally, the use of "Ned" helps to distinguish Eddard Stark from other characters named "Ed" in the series, such as Edmure Tully. **

Instead of being given a fair trial, Ned was swiftly executed as part of a power play by the Lannisters to solidify their control over the Iron Throne. His execution sparked a war between the Starks and the Lannisters, leading to further political turmoil in the realm. Ultimately, Ned's execution was a result of the Lannisters' manipulation of the situation rather than a legitimate legal process. **
