In Japan, the term can have negative connotations, implying social awkwardness and obsession to the point of unhealthy behavior. However, in Western anime fan communities, the term has been reclaimed and is often used as a self-identifier. Many anime fans dislike hearing it because of its negative connotations in Japan and the stigma associated with being labeled as an otaku. Additionally, some fans may feel that the term perpetuates stereotypes and does not accurately represent their love for anime and manga. **
