To close the merchandise accounts, you need to calculate the cost of goods sold by subtracting the beginning inventory from the sum of purchases and ending inventory. This will give you the total cost of goods sold for the period. Next, you need to transfer this amount from the merchandise account to the income statement as an expense. Finally, you can close the merchandise accounts by zeroing out the balances and transferring any remaining balances to the owner's equity account. **
